Summary (29-38 chapters)
For all his pain, Dirk remained a
ridiculous object. He could exercise tact when dealing with the affairs of
others, but nothing when dealing with his own. The narrator suggested that he should go home
for a while to come to consciousness but
he wouldn’t go. They hadn't seen
Strickland for several weeks and the author met him with Blanche in the café. They have played chess where he tried to beat
Strickland because he was a player who despised losers. A few months later,
Blanche, having quarreled with Strickland, took oxalic acid. The concierge sent
for a doctor and for Dirk, because he had given her twenty francs to send for
him if anything happened with Blanch. Dirk went twice a day to the hospital to
enquire after his wife, who declined to see him. She refused to speak as though
she waited for the coming of death. The complication which the doctor had feared ensued and recovery was impossible. When she became unconscious Dirk
went in and he didn’t notice she was dead until the nurse told him about it. Having
conducted the funeral, he decided to go home to Holland where he hadn’t been
for 5 years.
WELL DONE!
